About TJ Thornton

TimThornton

item19Tim is a fourth generation jeweller. Originally from Kettering where his great grandfather, Arthur Augustus Thornton began trading as A A Thornton in 1911. He was apprenticed to a watchmaker in Birmingham's Jewellery Quarter and his skills in watch repair became the foundation of the new business. He, in turn, was succeeded by his son, Pat and, until his death in 1997, Tim's father, Simon.

Tim came into the jewellery trade in 1989, joining the family business in Kettering and quickly discovered his passion for the trade. Eager to learn, he soon completed his Retail Jewellers Diploma, which led him to becoming a qualified Gemmologist and Diamond Grader.

These skills have helped Tim on buying trips to Sri Lanka, the source of many usual and unusual gemstones. Subsequently in 1995 Tim took the opportunity to work for Christies as a jewellery specialist in South Kensington, a job that really fired his interest in antique jewellery, doing so for two years until returning to Northamptonshire in 1997 after his father's death.

Since then, Tim has worked as a valuer to the jewellery trade in both the UK and New Zealand, plus two years as Head of Department and auctioneer for a leading Birmingham auction house, handling jewellery, silver, watches and clocks.

Tim has had a couple of TV appearances and numerous radio interviews and has been a speaker on his specialist subject of antique jewellery to a number of local organisations as part of their fundraising activities.

Tim has lived in Market Harborough, and has now returned to the area with his wife and young family, and he is keen to become part of the community, having taken over the premises that formerly belonged to Barrie Holliday, jeweller for over 25 years, until his retirement in September 2007.

In a matter of five weeks since taking over the premises, Tim managed to completely refurbish the premises and restock in time for the opening in early December.

After 18 years experience, Tim's passion for his chosen profession is undimmed, and he is proud to offer an unrivalled level of service to customers both old and new.

He looks forward to welcoming you to 3 Coventry Road and the words, "Tradition and Style", that are seen outside, are two very appropriate words that sum up the new jewel in Market Harborough's crown.
